With a market demanding around 0.2 million pangolins annually in China, pangolin populations are threatened heavily by illegal trade. To reduce pangolin market, it is necessary to much better understand why the demand exists and how products are being traded.
On 4 September, 2018, 9 AM BST/ 3 PM ICT , Yifu Wang presented about pangolin market in China focusing on 1) the overview of pangolin trade participant profiles and the conservation actions that has been done targeting different participants, and 2) more specifically pangolin consumption related to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) market.
About the presenters:
Yifu Wang starts her PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2015. Her research focuses on pangolin market and trade in China which is one of the major destinations for the trafficking of pangolin. As a Chinese national and conservationist, she cares deeply about biodiversity conservation. She has undertaken her fieldwork in two provinces in China and primarily used social science approaches to better understand the markets of different pangolin products. Key products include pangolin scales and meat which are traded differently along different trading chains.
